Contemporary Cinema

What was it like to go to the pictures in the 1920s? We are going to explore lots of ideas - the way the cinema and its technical equipment developed as well as how the audience of the time reacted to the films they saw as well as a history of the form's development and the rapid changes that cuased a revolution in the world of cinema of this period.

You will begin by creating a blog and doing some initial research into the first moving pictures, Das cabinet des Dr Caligari and Harold Lloyd, a silent cinema film star.

Start to find out some stuff about the 'normal' cinema of the time...research into Harold Lloyd. Find some clips from his films on youtube - choose TWO and link them onto your blog, writing up your thoughts about cinema in the early twenties - what was it like in terms of the viewing experience? What are the differences for you as a viewer compared to modern film?
